Tracie Nicole Thoms was born on August 19, 1975 in Balitmore, Maryland. She knew she wanted to act when she watched Junior Star Search when she was nine years old. In 1993 she graduated from Baltimore School for the Arts. She received her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Howard University and also attended Juliard.
